Medicaid Waiver

A Medicaid waiver allows the state to assist individuals and provide some long-term services to those with disabilities. The Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) maintains an “Interest List” (previously known as the “Waiting List”) for individuals with disabilities and their families who are requesting Medicaid waiver services.
To qualify for a waiver and be put on the Interest List you must:
• Have a diagnosis of IDD.
• Have a pervasive developmental disorder, such as autism, as defined in the current edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual.
• Have a related condition and be eligible for, and enroll in, an HHSC program that serves people with IDD.

Clients can maintain services while living in their own home, a group home with other people with IDD, an intermediate care facility for individuals with an intellectual disability or a related condition (ICF/IID) in their community, or a state supported living center.

Begin by calling your local IDD authority.
